Pubs of 2014

Right, here we go...... The purpose of this blog is to log all the pubs that I have visited and consumed an alcoholic beverage in during 2014. The rules are quite simple, the establishment needs to be a public house, it sounds straightforward but it may get complicated for example things that wouldn't count are a visit to the bar at the cricket, a pre gig drink in a concert venue, a drink at the Birmingham German market etc. As judge and jury my decision is final, and if I'm in any doubt I won't count it.

My prediction as at the start of the year is that the final number will be somewhere around the 200 mark though I won't go to pubs just to get the numbers up, it will be a true reflection of my pub visting year.

My posts will include information about the pub, the ambience of the surroundings, the choice and quality of the beer, any interesting or amusing anecdotes about my visit and, where possible, photographic evidence.

I will try and keep the information as accurate as possible noting that alcohol consumption means that at times this may prove difficult !!

The format of the posts is simple, the first visit to the pub will be the blog entry and that post will be updated for any subsequent visit.

Hope you enjoy it...

Cheers

UPDATE January 2015

Right, that's it, it's finally finished, some 259 pubs later !! It's been hard work but it's nice being able to look back and relive the drinking experiences of 2014.

I am pleased with the final result and whilst I've been reviewing it, I have actually laughed a few times at my own jokes !!

A word of warning, it does start off a bit slow (some of my posts from Bath are a bit dull) but stick with it. In hindsight the format of posting repeat visits to a pub on the original post at times doesn't work very well when reading the blog in its' entirety but on the whole I'm pleased with it and I hope that you enjoy it.

I have stated this in the blog but I will say it again, thanks to anyone that I have had a beer with in 2014 and special thanks to Shelley for her patience !!

The Place

Three pints on an empty stomach meant that it was time to eat and I'll be honest, Brean doesn't offer a multitude of choices on the food front, the fact that our flat for the weekend was (pardon the pun) sandwiched between a Subway and a chip shop tells you all you need to know about the culinary capabilities of Brean.

We'd had a look earlier at the menu outside a pub called The Place and it didn't look too bad so we walked the short distance from previous pub The Tavern, they seemingly only go for simple pub names in Brean.

I quite liked The Place, it wasn't a particularly good pub, but it was an ideal venue for some no nonsense pub grub and a pint. The beer was surprisingly good, my pint of Butcombe Bitter was very drinkable (Shelley too was impressed with her wine) and the food absolutely hit the spot, butterfly chicken for me and a piece of steak for Shelley just in case you are interested / the type of person that posts pictures of your food on Facebook.

Like every pub in Brean The Place was disappointingly family friendly, an observation backed up by the fact that there were seven children's high chairs stacked up in the corner. Maybe they were expecting an influx of kids as a result of Sooty's meet and greet that weekend at The Tavern !!

The pub itself was huge and quickly filled up with blokes with groups of young lads, we soon discovered that they were in Brean for a rugby tournament that weekend at Pontins. Rugby tournament?! When I used to go to Butlins as a child the only tournaments held back in those days were Glamorous Grandma and Miss Butlins. Where's it all gone wrong I ask myself?!!

We stopped for a second pint while we let our food settle then we psyched ourselves up to hit another sophisticated establishment on the Brean Strip.

UPDATE 3rd May

Our meal at The Place the previous night meant that there was no hesitation in us making a return visit following our visit to Weston. We were entertained during our bus journey back to Brean by a woman from who was originally from Solihull and had moved to Brean to live. She had been to the Weston working men's club that afternoon and to say that she was somewhat intoxicated would be an understatement. She told us her life story including the fact that since she'd been living in Weston, husband number one and husband number two had passed away. I couldn't get off the bus quickly enough in case she'd got her eyes on me as victim number three !!

We made an if it ain't broke don't fix it decision with our choice of food with us both having the same meal as we'd had the previous evening, with mine being washed down once again with a pint of Butcombe Bitter.

Our food was demolished in double quick time as our afternoon beers and the sea air had given us quite an appetite.

Once we were fed and watered it was time once again for us to hit the Brean Strip...
