Pubs of 2014

Right, here we go...... The purpose of this blog is to log all the pubs that I have visited and consumed an alcoholic beverage in during 2014. The rules are quite simple, the establishment needs to be a public house, it sounds straightforward but it may get complicated for example things that wouldn't count are a visit to the bar at the cricket, a pre gig drink in a concert venue, a drink at the Birmingham German market etc. As judge and jury my decision is final, and if I'm in any doubt I won't count it.

My prediction as at the start of the year is that the final number will be somewhere around the 200 mark though I won't go to pubs just to get the numbers up, it will be a true reflection of my pub visting year.

My posts will include information about the pub, the ambience of the surroundings, the choice and quality of the beer, any interesting or amusing anecdotes about my visit and, where possible, photographic evidence.

I will try and keep the information as accurate as possible noting that alcohol consumption means that at times this may prove difficult !!

The format of the posts is simple, the first visit to the pub will be the blog entry and that post will be updated for any subsequent visit.

Hope you enjoy it...

Cheers

UPDATE January 2015

Right, that's it, it's finally finished, some 259 pubs later !! It's been hard work but it's nice being able to look back and relive the drinking experiences of 2014.

I am pleased with the final result and whilst I've been reviewing it, I have actually laughed a few times at my own jokes !!

A word of warning, it does start off a bit slow (some of my posts from Bath are a bit dull) but stick with it. In hindsight the format of posting repeat visits to a pub on the original post at times doesn't work very well when reading the blog in its' entirety but on the whole I'm pleased with it and I hope that you enjoy it.

I have stated this in the blog but I will say it again, thanks to anyone that I have had a beer with in 2014 and special thanks to Shelley for her patience !!

Rock It

There's little wonder why I like living in Tamworth so much, there's two pubs in the town centre with the word 'rock' in their name, Tamworth Rock and Sports Bar and Rock It.

I dragged Shelley in while we on route from The Phoenix to the curry house on Saturday evening. The place was fairly deserted, the music selection was fairly loud, and the drink selection was fairly limited. I nearly joined Shelley on the rarely seen Olde English cider but instead opted to play it safe with a pint of Guinness and instantly regretted my decision. It was one of those venues that, despite evidence suggesting otherwise, doesn't serve proper draught Guinness, instead they get a can from the fridge pour it into a glass then place it onto a plate device to give it its creamy head. I nearly told them to Pogue Mahone !! (Look it up, it's Gaelic).

Whilst certainly not to everyone's taste I did enjoy the music during our brief stay, what's there not to like about tracks from the likes of Metallica and Guns 'n' Roses?!!

We didn't stop long but we did laugh as we were leaving, we bumped into a character we had been talking to a couple of hours before (see The Bolebridge 10th May update). When we saw him earlier he was wearing a hat and a cape, seeing as he was now indulging in some good old rock 'n' roll he had changed into a straw hat and denim jacket !! How very very odd.

UPDATE 4th October

Following my trip to Derby to meet up with my mate Matt I had an hour or so to kill before I was due to meet Shelley at The Bolebridge so I decided to pop into Rock It for a beer and some classic rock. The one problem with Rock It is that the beer choice is anything but classic, the selection of draught beer was as follows : Carling (two pumps), Olde English cider, Coors or Guinness. I'm sure Alice Cooper's song Welcome to my Nightmare was written about my beer choice in Rock It !!

I was tempted to go down the bottle route but the fact that the beer selection in the fridge was obscured by a huge logo stating Frosted Beer ruled that option out. I reluctantly asked for a Carling darling.

The fact that I was proudly wearing my Dio Holy Diver tee shirt meant that although the beer was dreadful at least my attire wouldn't look out of place, mind you, I'm not convinced that Shelley would be overly impressed by my sartorial elegance when I met her later..

Unfortunately it seems that the rock fans in Tamworth may be a dwindling bunch, there were only another five people in the place, this number included a man in a wheelchair who twice had to be given oxygen by his two helpers !! At one stage I thought our numbers had swelled to six but the gentleman in question was from a neighbouring pub requesting change !!

Lack of numbers didn't matter, the play list left me feeling breathless (sorry, have I overstepped the mark?!!), Guns n Roses, Whitesnake, Metallica, AC/DC. I could have been at the O2 (now, now, that's enough, no more bad taste jokes !!).

The fact that I had arranged to meet Shelley meant that the numbers dwindled further when I left to the strains of Iron Maiden's Run to the Hills, which strictly speaking wasn't what I was doing, it was more of an amble to The Bolebridge !!
